ABSA BANK VEHICLE AUCTION: OVER 200 VEHICLES AND A VERY DIFFERENT PICTURE OF BUYING USED

For many South Africans, the words “vehicle auction” still conjure up a fairly predictable image: older cars, high mileages, questionable condition and a buying environment best left to motor dealers and people who know their way around a workshop. The upcoming Absa Bank Passenger and Commercial Vehicle Auction, hosted by Park Village Auctions in Boksburg, makes a compelling case for looking at the auction market differently. Scheduled for Tuesday, 8 September 2026 at 10:00, the bank-instructed webcast auction is currently advertised with more than 200 genuine Absa repossessed passenger and commercial vehicles. Bidding opens online on Monday, 7 September, before the catalogue is taken through lot by lot via webcast on Tuesday morning.

Absa Bank Vehicle and Commercial Auction featuring over 200 passenger and commercial vehicles at Park Village Auctions.

This is not simply a collection of old cars

Scroll through the catalogue and the breadth of stock is immediately apparent. There are affordable everyday cars, SUVs, premium vehicles, bakkies and commercial vehicles from many of the brands South Africans know well. More importantly, there are some remarkably late-model vehicles in the mix. Among the vehicles currently listed is a 2025 Volkswagen Polo Vivo 1.6 Life Tiptronic with just 17,560 km, while a 2025 Chery Tiggo 4 Pro 1.5T is showing 28,549 km and a 2025 Jetour Dashing 1.5T Deluxe just 27,019 km. Move into the bakkie section and the point becomes even clearer. A 2026 Ford Ranger 2.0D XL Double Cab is listed with only 9,472 km, while a 2026 Nissan Navara 2.5DDTi PRO-2X automatic double cab shows just 10,801 km. There is also a 2024 Ford Ranger Wildtrak, a 2023 Isuzu D-Max and several other commercial options in the catalogue. That is a very different proposition from the stereotype many private buyers still associate with bank auctions.

Why do these vehicles end up at auction?

A repossessed vehicle is not automatically a damaged or mechanically troublesome vehicle. In straightforward terms, repossession generally happens because the borrower has defaulted on the finance agreement. Once the necessary process has been completed, the financial institution may sell the vehicle through auction to recover the outstanding debt. The reason a vehicle reaches an auction therefore relates primarily to the finance agreement, not necessarily to the mechanical condition of the vehicle. That distinction matters. A late-model vehicle with low mileage can be repossessed just as an older, higher-mileage vehicle can. The current Absa catalogue demonstrates precisely that.

At the same time, buyers should not swing too far in the other direction and assume that every auction vehicle is pristine. It isn't. The same catalogue contains vehicles where Park Village specifically records hail damage, warning lights, previous repairs, mechanical issues and, in some instances, non-runners. That transparency is valuable because it allows a prospective buyer to distinguish between very different types of stock rather than treating every auction vehicle as though it carries the same risk. Park Village itself makes the buyer's responsibility clear: catalogue descriptions are provided as guidance, buyers should satisfy themselves as to condition and accuracy, and physical inspection is recommended where possible. Viewing for this auction is scheduled for Monday, 7 September from 09:00 to 15:00 and again on auction morning from 08:00 to 10:00. For a private buyer, that is perhaps the most important rule of auction buying: do the homework before raising your hand.

Where the opportunity lies

Price remains one of the principal reasons auctions attract professional motor traders, but increasingly private buyers are beginning to look at the same marketplace. Auction pricing is typically approached differently from dealer retail pricing. AutoTrader's guide to repossessed vehicle auctions notes that reserve prices are generally considered against used trade value together with factors such as mileage and condition, and cites experienced auctioneers saying reserves can sit below conventional retail-market levels. That does not mean every vehicle bought at auction is automatically a bargain, nor should a buyer assume that every winning bid will be below trade value. Competitive bidding can change the final price quickly. What auctions offer is the opportunity to buy differently.

The sensible buyer establishes the vehicle's market value beforehand, examines the condition, reads the auction terms, accounts for buyer's commission, VAT and applicable fees, decides on a maximum all-in price and then sticks to it. On the current Absa auction, for example, individual catalogue listings show a 5% commission and a R2,608.70 facilitation fee, with VAT treatment also disclosed. Those costs need to form part of the calculation before deciding what constitutes a good buy. That is where the difference between cheap and good value becomes important. The objective should never simply be to win the bid. It should be to buy the right vehicle at the right total price.

Auctions are no longer just for cash buyers

Another misconception that has kept many private buyers away from auctions is the belief that you need to arrive with enough cash to settle the vehicle outright. On this Absa auction, pre-approved finance is available through Auction Finance. Park Village specifically states this in the auction information. There is an additional advantage for buyers who arrange that finance before registering. The standard registration deposit for this auction is R7,000, but Park Village confirms that clients with pre-approved Auction Finance can register to bid without paying that deposit, provided the auctioneer has received the required confirmation from Auction Finance.

That changes the experience considerably for a private buyer. Instead of seeing something desirable in the catalogue and only then trying to work out whether it can be financed, the buyer can establish affordability and obtain pre-approval beforehand, inspect and research the vehicles that fit the budget, and approach auction day knowing where the financial boundaries lie.

Perhaps it is time private buyers looked at auctions differently

South Africa's used-car market has traditionally placed the dealership between the wholesale vehicle market and the consumer. Auctions offer buyers an opportunity to look further upstream. That comes with responsibility. Auction vehicles are sold under auction conditions. Buyers need to understand those conditions, inspect carefully, research values and resist getting carried away once bidding starts. But the reward is access to an extraordinarily broad pool of vehicles.

The upcoming Absa sale is a good illustration. In one catalogue a buyer can move from inexpensive everyday transport to SUVs and premium cars, then into double-cab bakkies and commercial vehicles. At the newer end of that catalogue sit 2025 models and even 2026 vehicles with fewer than 11,000 kilometres on their odometers. That alone should challenge the idea that a bank auction is simply somewhere old, worn-out vehicles go to be disposed of.

For somebody already considering a used vehicle, an auction does not have to replace the traditional dealership. But with the right research, a proper inspection, a firm bidding limit and finance arranged before auction day, it deserves to be considered alongside it. The Absa Passenger and Commercial Vehicle Auction takes place online through Park Village Auctions on Tuesday, 8 September 2026 from 10:00, with registration closing at 09:00 that morning.

A Changing Vehicle Market Is Creating New Buying Opportunities

A recent TopAuto article highlighted a significant shift in South Africa's vehicle market. According to research referenced by the Automobile Association (AA), more than 90% of South African motorists are keeping their vehicles for longer, as the cost of replacing them continues to rise.

The article also points out that vehicles on South African roads are getting older, placing even greater importance on regular maintenance, preventative servicing and careful ownership to maximise reliability and longevity.

Fortunately, today's buyers have more options than ever before.

Looking beyond the traditional dealership

While many motorists automatically begin their search at a dealership, an increasing number of savvy buyers are discovering the value available through Bank, Fleet and Commercial Vehicle Auctions.

These auctions offer access to an extensive range of vehicles from banks, finance houses, fleet operators, rental companies, government departments and corporate fleets. From hatchbacks and family SUVs to bakkies, commercial trucks, plant and machinery, auctions provide buyers with access to thousands of vehicles entering the market every month.

One of the biggest advantages is value.

Many auction vehicles sell well below traditional retail pricing, allowing buyers to stretch their budgets further or step into a newer, higher-specification vehicle than they may have initially considered.

More choice. More opportunities.

South Africa's auction market is incredibly diverse. Every week, auctions take place across the country featuring:

  • Passenger vehicles
  • SUVs and bakkies
  • Commercial trucks
  • Fleet replacement vehicles
  • Repossessed vehicles
  • Construction and agricultural equipment
  • Plant and machinery

Whether you're buying your first car, upgrading your family vehicle or expanding your business fleet, auctions present opportunities that many buyers simply don't realise exist.

One place to find them all

Knowing where and when these auctions are taking place can be the biggest challenge.

That's why Auction Finance brings together one of South Africa's most comprehensive listings of upcoming Bank, Fleet and Commercial Vehicle Auctions in one convenient location.

Browse upcoming auction events nationwide, discover new buying opportunities, and take the first step towards finding your next vehicle.

Your Car Is an Asset — Are You Using It Like One?

For most South Africans, a car is seen as a monthly expense: repayments, fuel, insurance, tyres, services… the list never ends.

But what if you looked at it differently?

A reliable vehicle isn’t just something that gets you from A to B — it’s also an asset. And when used strategically, it can help you improve your cash flow, restructure your finances, and create breathing room without needing to sell.

In a time where household budgets are tight and the cost of living continues to bite, more people are asking a simple question:

How can I make my current vehicle work better for me?

That’s where vehicle refinance comes in.

Man driving vehicle

What does it mean to refinance your vehicle?

Vehicle refinance is a finance option that allows you to restructure your existing vehicle finance — and depending on your situation, you may also be able to access cash using your car.

In simple terms, refinancing can help you:

Reduce your monthly repayments
Improve your cash flow
Restructure your loan to make it more manageable
Unlock value from your vehicle (cash-out option)
Keep driving your car as normal

It’s not about starting over,  it’s about optimising what you already have.

Why refinance instead of taking a personal loan?

When you’re under pressure financially, it’s tempting to take the quickest option available.

But personal loans can often come with higher interest rates and repayment structures that don’t always fit comfortably into a monthly budget.

Vehicle refinance can be a smarter move because your car acts as the underlying asset , which can often mean a more structured, manageable solution compared to unsecured borrowing.

Signs it might be time to restructure your repayments

Refinance isn’t only for people in trouble,  it’s for people who want to be smart and proactive.

Here are a few signs it may be worth exploring:

  • Your monthly vehicle repayment feels too heavy

  • You’re covering expenses with credit cards or short-term debt

  • You need extra cash for a once-off expense (school fees, medical, home repairs, etc.)

  • You want to consolidate or restructure finances into something more manageable

  • You want to keep your vehicle but improve your financial flexibility

Sometimes, a small change in structure can make a big difference in your month-to-month comfort.

The smarter way to access cash… without selling your car

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to sell your car to unlock value.

In reality, refinancing may allow you to access cash using your vehicle while still keeping it on the road.

That means you can potentially unlock funds for the things that matter most, without losing the vehicle you rely on daily.

Refinance isn’t a “last resort” — it’s a strategy

There’s a shift happening in the market.

More people are choosing to hold onto good pre-owned vehicles longer, rather than upgrading into higher-priced replacements and taking on bigger repayments.

Why?

Because keeping a reliable car and improving the structure around it is often the more strategic move.

Refinancing can help you preserve capital, reduce stress, and make your vehicle finance work for your lifestyle, not against it.

Inside Track: Why Absa Bank Auctions Are a Goldmine for Used Car Buyers (Especially with Finance in Mind)

If you’re in the market for a quality used car and haven’t considered buying at an Absa Bank auction, now’s the time to pay attention. While dealerships continue to mark up prices and private sellers become increasingly unreliable, bank auctions remain one of South Africa’s best-kept automotive secrets. And Absa? They run one of the most reputable and transparent vehicle auctions in the country.

Whether you're a first-time bidder or an auction regular looking for a new ride, this guide is here to steer you straight—especially if you're planning to buy on finance.

2022 VOLKSWAGEN POLO 1.0 TSI LIFE DSG (ODO : 37492)

What Is an Absa Bank Auction—and Why Should You Care?

Let’s start with the basics. Absa Bank auctions are held to sell repossessed or fleet-return vehicles. That means most of these cars are still in good running condition—some even have full service histories and relatively low mileage. Unlike private sales, where you never really know what you’re getting, these auctions are managed professionally with full catalogues, disclosure on condition, and proper documentation.

But here’s the kicker: prices are usually well below retail value. You’re not paying for the showroom lights or the free keyring. You’re paying for the car—and that’s it.

Add Absa’s established reputation into the mix, and you’re dealing with a process that’s not only well-regulated but also transparent and above board.

Why Savvy Buyers Choose Absa Auctions

1. Quality Vehicles, Often Gently Used

Many people hear the word “repossessed” and assume wrecks. Not so. The majority of vehicles at an Absa auction were simply defaulted on—not damaged or neglected. These cars often come with a traceable service record and sometimes balance of warranty. From city hatchbacks to luxury SUVs, you’ll find a diverse mix worth browsing.

2. You Can Snag Serious Bargains

Dealerships need to make a profit. Auctions are about moving stock. That means no padded pricing, no inflated ‘on-the-road’ fees, and no hidden upsells. If you’re strategic, patient, and a bit lucky, you could walk away with a car worth tens of thousands more than what you paid.

3. It’s a Fair and Open Process

Absa doesn’t play games. Vehicles are clearly listed with details. You can inspect the car ahead of the auction. The bidding process is transparent and competitive—you’ll know exactly what you’re getting into.

Can You Get Finance for Auction Cars? Absolutely.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to bring a suitcase of cash to an auction. Not true. Financing is available—especially if you plan ahead.

1. Get Pre-Approved for Maximum Confidence

The smartest move? Get pre-approved for vehicle finance before the auction. Auction Finance offers a streamlined pre-approval process that allows you to know exactly how much you can spend, which cars are within your budget, and what your repayment terms will look like.

This not only gives you confidence, but it also helps speed up the process post-auction—you won’t be scrambling to sort your paperwork while someone else drives away in your car.

Why South Africans Are Turning to Auctions for Affordable Cars

With over 73% of new cars in South Africa now costing more than R500,000, owning a vehicle has become a distant dream for many. According to a recent article by TopAuto, the average formal sector salary of R26,800 per month means most South Africans can only afford a car priced at around R250,000—a price point where new car options are virtually nonexistent.

But there’s good news for savvy buyers: auctions are emerging as the go-to solution for affordable, clean, late-model vehicles. Here’s why more South Africans are turning to auctions to find their next car—and how Auction Finance can help you secure a great deal.

man buying a auction car

The Rising Cost of New Cars

As highlighted in the TopAuto article, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains, leading to production shutdowns and a surge in car prices. Even as production has recovered, prices have remained high due to factors like the fluctuating rand, high import duties (18%-25%), and the inclusion of advanced tech features in modern vehicles.

The result? The average South African is priced out of the new car market, with only a handful of models available under R250,000.

Why Auctions Are the Answer

Auctions offer a practical and affordable alternative to buying new. Here’s why they’re gaining popularity:

  • Unbeatable Prices: Auction trends show that vehicles are currently selling at around 85% of their trade value—well below retail prices. This means you can secure a high-quality, late-model vehicle for significantly less than you’d pay at a dealership.

  • Wide Variety: From fuel-efficient hatchbacks to reliable bakkies, auctions offer a diverse range of makes, models, and conditions to suit every budget.

  • No Dealer Mark-Up: By cutting out the middleman, you save on the hefty dealer mark-up, leaving room in your budget for insurance, maintenance, and upgrades.

  • Great for Resale: Buying at auction means you’re less likely to take a big hit on resale value, making it a smarter long-term investment.

Addressing Auction Concerns

We understand that some buyers may be hesitant about auctions due to the “voetstoots” (sold as-is) nature of the sales. However, reputable auctioneers like MFC provide Dekra inspection reports on all their vehicles, giving you peace of mind about the car’s condition.

Additionally, Auction Finance offers a variety of Value-Added Products and Services (VAPS), including warranty options and maintenance plans, to protect your purchase.

How Auction Finance Can Help

At Auction Finance, we make the auction process seamless and stress-free. Here’s how:

  • Pre-Approved Finance: Get pre-approved and know your budget before you bid.

  • Onsite Support: Our team is available at all major auctions, including bank vehicle, fleet, and commercial auctions, to assist you every step of the way.

  • VAPS: Protect your purchase with our range of value-added products.

Don’t Miss Out on the Auction Advantage

With new car prices soaring and affordability becoming a major concern, auctions offer a practical and cost-effective solution for South African buyers. Whether you’re looking for a fuel-efficient runabout or a reliable family car, auctions provide access to a wide range of vehicles at prices that won’t break the bank.

Spend More Time in Your Car Than Your Couch? Let’s Get You an Upgrade!

Let’s be real: a lot of us are clocking more hours in traffic than we’d like to admit. According to TopAuto (check out their article here), many South Africans are averaging close to an hour stuck in traffic every day! That’s practically a part-time job... with zero benefits (unless you count snack crumbs in the cup holder). 🤦‍♂️ So, if your car’s interior is basically where you live now, maybe it’s time to upgrade your ride – you know, for the sake of your sanity and your snack game.

The Secret Car Dealers Don't Want You to Know When Buying a Used Car!

Are you struggling to find a quality used car at a reasonable price? You're not alone. The landscape of buying used cars in South Africa has drastically changed, leaving many buyers with fewer avenues to purchase cars as affordably as they once could when buying privately listed vehicles online. Traditionally, those in search of a great deal would scour the internet for private sales. However, with the rise of big brand car buyers who are purchasing a significant portion of private cars for sale, the stock of available private listings is dwindling. This scarcity, coupled with an increase in online fraudsters scamming potential buyers with fake car listings, has made the process even more challenging.

Happy Black man smiling with his head sticking out of a car window

So, why aren't more people considering buying at auctions?

South Africa holds around 10+ auctions nationally each week, many of which offer online bidding. These are reputable bank auctions, big fleet company disposals, and commercial vehicle auctions, boasting a wide variety of popular makes and models, including many late models with low mileage and older, budget-friendly options.

Why Private Buyers Aren't Taking Advantage of Auctions

  1. Concerns Around Transparency of Online Bidding

Many buyers worry about the transparency of online bidding. However, the auction industry has made significant strides in regulation and transparency over the past few years. Reputable auctioneers are members of the South African Institute of Auctioneers (SAIA), ensuring a level of trust and integrity.

Additionally, if you see "Auction Finance" available, you can rest assured that this is the bank's approved finance arm facilitating finance at these reputable auctioneers across SA. To make it even easier, Auction Finance offer a free WhatsApp Auction Alerts service, listing genuine bank (ABSA, WesBank, MFC, and Standard Bank), fleet, and commercial auctions.

  2. Perception That Dealers Outbid the Private Sector

There's a common misconception that dealers can outbid private buyers. In reality, vehicle pricing at auctions is dictated by the market. The bidding process considers various factors like vehicle mileage, condition, popularity, and even the weather on the day can effect the final bid!

Dealers buy either to wholesale the car or to sell it off their dealership floor, meaning they still need to make a margin on reselling the purchase. Private buyers can still outbid dealers and, by buying a vehicle at auction between trade and retail, save on the dealer's reconditioning costs, which might include unnecessary cosmetics and the dealers mark-up.

  3. Lack of Awareness About Auctions

Many private buyers simply aren't aware that these auctions are happening. While dealers are actively seeking new stock and keeping updated about auctions, few auctioneers have a significant presence in the marketplace. This is where staying in contact with our WhatsApp group can be incredibly beneficial, providing updates and sharing the link with family and friends.

  4. Unawareness of Available Finance at Auctions

Perhaps the biggest reason people don't bid is that they don't know finance is available for auction vehicles. Auction Finance is available on-site at all reputable bank auctions across SA. Our staff is there to assist clients through the process, discussing finance options, and securing pre-approval. This takes the risk out of bidding, allowing bidders to participate with confidence. We guide them on maximum bids, considering various add-ons at the auction like VAT and buyer's commission if applicable.

Why Consider Auction Finance?

Auction Finance simplifies the buying process at auctions by offering pre-approved finance. This service not only helps you bid with confidence but also ensures you have a clear understanding of your budget and the associated costs.
