What If Rising Interest Rates Are Actually Making Auctions More Attractive?

If you've been following the economic headlines lately, it's easy to believe that vehicle ownership in South Africa is becoming increasingly difficult. Fuel prices have risen sharply, inflation has started moving higher again, and the South African Reserve Bank recently increased interest rates, placing additional pressure on consumers who rely on vehicle finance.

Yet, despite these challenges, South Africa's vehicle market continues to show remarkable resilience. According to Naamsa, more than 51,000 new vehicles were sold in May 2026, making it the strongest May performance since 2013. Consumers are clearly still buying vehicles, but the reasons behind those purchases are changing.

The days of buying purely on emotion appear to be fading. Today's buyers are far more focused on affordability, fuel efficiency, practicality and long-term ownership costs. They are asking tougher questions and paying closer attention to where their money goes. Most importantly, they are looking for value.

This shift in thinking may create one of the biggest opportunities the South African auction market has seen in years.

For decades, vehicle buyers have typically focused on finding the right vehicle before considering the finance. In today's environment, however, many consumers are approaching the process differently. Instead of asking what vehicle they can afford each month, they are asking how they can reduce the amount they need to finance in the first place.

It is a subtle difference, but an important one.

Every rand saved on the purchase price is a rand that does not need to be borrowed. It is a rand that will not attract interest for the next six years. In a market where fuel prices, insurance costs and interest rates all continue to exert pressure on household budgets, purchase price has become one of the most powerful tools available to consumers.

This is one of the reasons why auctions continue to attract increasing attention from informed buyers.

What many South Africans do not realise is the sheer scale of the country's auction industry. Every week, banks, fleet operators, liquidators and businesses release thousands of assets into the market. Passenger vehicles, bakkies, trucks, commercial fleets, agricultural equipment, construction machinery and industrial assets are sold through auctions taking place across every major province.

The challenge for most buyers is not finding value. The challenge is finding the opportunities before everyone else does.

Many people only discover an auction after it has closed. Others follow a single auctioneer and remain unaware of opportunities taking place elsewhere. Yet on any given week there may be dozens of vehicle, fleet, commercial and agricultural auctions taking place throughout South Africa.

This is where information becomes valuable.

As the market evolves, buyers who know where to look are increasingly finding opportunities that many others never see. Access to comprehensive auction information, upcoming catalogues, viewing dates and stock listings has become just as important as access to finance itself.

At Auction Finance, we have spent years building relationships with many of South Africa's leading auctioneers. The result is one of the country's most comprehensive collections of upcoming bank, fleet, commercial and agricultural auction listings. From repossessed vehicles and ex-fleet stock to trucks, yellow metal and farming equipment, our objective is simple: to help buyers discover opportunities across the national auction market.

While much of the conversation around the economy focuses on rising costs, informed buyers are focusing on something different. They are focusing on value.

Economic uncertainty does not stop assets from changing hands. Banks still dispose of stock. Companies still replace fleets. Businesses still liquidate surplus equipment. Opportunities continue to appear every day.

The difference is that in tougher economic conditions, those opportunities often become more important than ever.

Perhaps the real story of 2026 is not that interest rates have increased or that fuel costs are higher. Perhaps the real story is that South Africans are becoming smarter buyers, looking beyond traditional purchasing channels and discovering opportunities that have been hiding in plain sight all along.

To view upcoming auctions on our platform, visit http://auctionfinance.co.za/auction-events/. Sort by region, bank or auction type and find direct links to auctions happening daily across South Africa. Finance is available at these auctions through Auction Finance.

Interest Rates Just Went Up. Your Car Repayment Deserves A Second Look.

Just when many South Africans were hoping for some financial relief, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has announced a 25-basis-point increase in interest rates, pushing the repo rate to 7.0% and the prime lending rate to 10.50%. The decision comes against a backdrop of rising inflation, increasing fuel costs and growing economic uncertainty linked to ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

For many households, the timing could not be worse.

Fuel prices have surged, the cost of everyday goods continues to climb and disposable income is under pressure. SARB Governor Lesetja Kganyago warned that South Africans are facing a difficult combination of higher living costs and reduced spending power, which is expected to impact both household consumption and economic growth.

While consumers have little control over global oil prices, inflation or interest rate decisions, there may be one area where some financial relief can still be found: reviewing existing vehicle finance.

For many South Africans, a vehicle instalment is one of the largest monthly expenses after housing. Yet many motorists continue paying on finance agreements that were structured years ago under very different circumstances. A change in income, household expenses or financial priorities can often create an opportunity to revisit that finance structure.

Vehicle refinance is not about taking on more debt. In many cases, it is about restructuring existing finance to improve monthly cash flow and create breathing room in a budget that is under increasing pressure. For consumers facing rising fuel costs, higher interest rates and escalating household expenses, even a modest reduction in monthly commitments can make a meaningful difference.

This is particularly relevant now. Inflation accelerated to 4% in April, fuel costs remain elevated and the Reserve Bank has signalled that inflation risks remain a concern.

The reality is that many households are trying to absorb multiple cost increases simultaneously. Groceries cost more. Transport costs more. School fees and insurance premiums continue to rise. In this environment, waiting until financial pressure becomes overwhelming is rarely the best strategy.

Instead, now may be the right time to review your current vehicle finance arrangement and determine whether a more suitable structure is available.

Every situation is different. The right solution will depend on factors such as the value of the vehicle, the outstanding balance, affordability and individual financial objectives. However, the first step is often simply having the conversation.

The fuel price may be beyond your control. Interest rate decisions are beyond your control. But reviewing your vehicle finance could be one of the few practical steps available to help restore balance to your monthly budget.

If rising costs are putting pressure on your finances, speak to a finance specialist and explore your options.

Is now really the right time to finance a vehicle in South Africa?

man considers finance

South Africans are nervous about spending money right now. You can feel it everywhere. Interest rates remain high, fuel prices continue to fluctuate, global uncertainty dominates headlines, and many households are questioning every major financial decision they make.

And yet, quietly in the background, something unusual is happening in the used vehicle market.

Some of the best buying opportunities seen in years are currently sitting on auction floors across South Africa.

Not broken-down scrap. Not tired old fleet vehicles with impossible mileage. Proper vehicles. Late models. Sought-after brands. Low mileage stock. Commercial vehicles. Bakkies. SUVs. Passenger vehicles. The kind of stock many buyers would happily purchase from a dealership showroom at a far higher price.

The difference is that many of these vehicles are currently selling at prices well below what consumers expect.

In many cases, vehicles are selling around 75% to 80% of trade value. That is not marketing hype. It is happening daily on reputable bank and fleet auctions across the country.

At a time when South Africans are worried about affordability, many hesitant buyers may actually be standing on the sidelines during one of the strongest value-buying periods the used vehicle market has seen in some time.

The irony is that fear often creates opportunity.

When consumers become uncertain, demand softens. When demand softens, prices become more realistic. Sellers become motivated. Buyers suddenly regain negotiating power. And nowhere is that more visible than on the auction floor right now.

For years, auctions carried an outdated reputation in the minds of some buyers. People imagined damaged vehicles, risky purchases, or inaccessible buying environments reserved only for dealers. That picture has changed dramatically.

Modern bank and fleet auctions now feature structured online bidding platforms, nationwide webcast events, professionally catalogued stock, viewing days, and a growing selection of quality vehicles entering the market from major banks, fleets and corporate de-fleets.

More importantly, many South Africans are beginning to realise something dealers have understood for years: buying correctly matters more than buying new.

The biggest financial hit most consumers take on a vehicle happens in the early depreciation cycle. The moment a new vehicle leaves the showroom floor, thousands of rand in value can disappear almost immediately. Meanwhile, a quality late-model used vehicle purchased correctly can often provide years of reliable ownership while preserving far more value for the buyer.

That matters even more in today’s economic climate.

There is also another factor many consumers may not be considering carefully enough: the interest rate environment.

While nobody can predict markets with certainty, ongoing global instability, inflationary pressures and international economic tension continue to create uncertainty around future interest rate movements. Many analysts still believe volatility remains a risk.

For buyers who genuinely need a vehicle in the near future, waiting indefinitely for “perfect conditions” may not necessarily work in their favour.

In fact, securing a quality used vehicle now, while values remain attractive and finance structures can still be fixed at current rates, may prove to be the smarter long-term decision for many South Africans.

Of course, the key is buying intelligently.

That means: understanding your budget properly, securing finance before auction day, focusing on reputable auctions, and purchasing vehicles that make long-term financial sense rather than emotional decisions made under pressure.

Prepared buyers consistently outperform emotional buyers on auction floors.

This is exactly why pre-approved auction finance has become such an important part of the modern auction environment. Buyers who arrive finance-ready are able to move quickly, bid confidently and secure opportunities when they appear.

And right now, those opportunities are appearing often.

South Africans are not wrong to be cautious. But cautious and paralysed are two very different things.

Because while many consumers are waiting for certainty, others are quietly buying excellent vehicles at prices that may not remain this attractive forever.

You wouldn’t marry someone on the first date. Yet most people say yes to a finance deal just as quickly.

finance consultant proposing finance deal

There is something oddly rushed about the way most people approach finance.

A conversation starts, a few details are shared, a number is presented, and suddenly a decision is expected. Not just any decision, but one that will shape cash flow, risk and financial position for years to come. All within a matter of minutes.

In almost every other part of life, that would feel uncomfortable.

Trust is usually built slowly. It is observed in small moments, tested over time, and reinforced through consistency. People take time to understand who they are dealing with, what experience sits behind the advice, and whether the outcome genuinely aligns with their interests.

Finance, however, often bypasses that process entirely.

Approval has become fast. In many cases, almost instant. But speed has quietly replaced scrutiny, and that has created a new problem. The focus has shifted toward whether a deal can be done, rather than whether it should be done in that form at all.

That distinction matters more than most people realise.

A finance decision is not just about securing an asset. It is about structuring it correctly. Whether the requirement is a vehicle, a commercial truck, equipment, a private-to-private purchase, leisure funding, or even unlocking capital through refinancing, the principle remains the same. The structure behind the deal determines whether it works over time.

When that structure is rushed or forced into a single option, the outcome may be approved, but it is rarely optimal.

This is where experience becomes visible.

At Finance Warehouse, the process does not begin with a single lender or a fixed product. It begins with understanding the full picture, then working across multiple banks and a network of recognised funders to find the right fit. Not simply the first approval, but the most appropriate one.

That approach has been built over more than 23 years in the market. It has been shaped through thousands of client engagements and supported by long-standing relationships with all major banks, as well as a wide range of additional funding partners.

It also extends into environments where preparation is not optional.

Across South Africa, Finance Warehouse operates alongside clients in real-world buying environments, including bank and reputable auction house floors, where decisions are made in real time and structure matters before the moment arrives. But that same level of preparation applies just as much to private purchases, business funding decisions and asset-backed transactions.

In each case, the difference is not the product. It is the thinking behind it.

Clients who approach finance this way are not looking for quick answers. They are looking for clarity. They want to understand what is possible, what is sensible, and what aligns with their position before they commit. They understand that a well-structured deal creates flexibility, while a rushed one often creates pressure later.

Trust, in this context, is not something that appears instantly. It is built through consistency, through outcomes, and through the confidence that comes from knowing the decision has been structured properly from the start.

If you are considering your next move, the conversation does not need to begin with an application. It can begin with understanding your position, your options, and the structure that best supports them.

From there, the right deal can be built.

Finance Warehouse works with clients across South Africa, structuring finance solutions across vehicles, commercial assets, private transactions, refinancing and more, supported by access to multiple banks and funders.

Speed has changed finance. Bad decisions just happen faster now.

There is a growing perception in South Africa that finance has become easier.

Applications are completed online, approvals are returned quickly, and in many cases, buyers can move from enquiry to confirmation within a matter of hours. On the surface, this appears to represent progress and in many respects, it does.

However, speed has introduced a subtle but important shift in how decisions are made.

What was once a considered process has, in many cases, become a rapid transaction. And while access to finance has improved, understanding has not necessarily kept pace.

At Finance Warehouse, this shift has become increasingly evident in how clients approach funding decisions. While access to finance has improved significantly, the need for informed guidance has grown alongside it,  particularly for individuals and businesses navigating multiple financial commitments.

The gap between approval and understanding

Modern finance platforms are designed for efficiency. They provide immediate feedback, clear monthly instalments, and streamlined application processes. For many buyers, this creates a sense of certainty.

Yet the underlying decision is more complex than the interface suggests.

A finance agreement is not simply a function of affordability. It is a combination of variables — term, deposit, interest rate, residual value, each of which has a direct impact on long-term cost, flexibility, and risk exposure.

Two agreements can present near-identical monthly instalments while producing materially different outcomes over time. The distinction is not always obvious at the point of decision, but it becomes increasingly relevant as circumstances evolve.

Access is no longer the differentiator

Historically, the ability to secure finance was itself a competitive advantage. Today, that is far less the case.

With established credit profiles and stable income, many buyers will receive approval from at least one institution. The conversation has therefore shifted from whether finance can be obtained, to how it is structured across available options.

This is where a multi-bank approach becomes meaningful. By submitting a single application across multiple institutions, it is possible to evaluate different pricing models, risk appetites, and structuring options simultaneously.

The result is not merely a higher probability of approval, but a more informed position from which to make a decision. In effect, it restores a degree of control to the buyer, something that is often diminished when working within the constraints of a single lender.

While digital platforms have improved efficiency, they have not replaced the value of human insight. Finance decisions, particularly those involving significant assets or business commitments, benefit from direct engagement, where nuances can be properly understood and options carefully considered.

At Finance Warehouse, this remains a core part of our approach. We believe that meaningful financial decisions are still best supported through real conversations, not just automated outputs.

Finance decisions do not exist in isolation

Another limitation of conventional finance processes is that they tend to treat each transaction independently.

In practice, most individuals and businesses operate across multiple financial commitments. Vehicles, equipment, working capital, and expansion plans are often interconnected, whether explicitly or not.

A finance agreement that appears appropriate in isolation may place strain on broader cash flow or limit flexibility in future decisions. Conversely, a well-considered structure can support growth, preserve liquidity, and create optionality.

For this reason, a more integrated view of finance is increasingly important. Solutions today extend beyond traditional vehicle finance to include commercial and fleet funding, auction acquisitions, private-to-private transactions, refinance structures, agri and yellow metal equipment, specialised assets such as drones, commercial solar installations, personal lending, and business funding.

This is not a matter of product range for its own sake, but a reflection of how financial decisions are made in reality.

The role of asset selection

It is also worth noting that the quality of a finance decision is influenced by the asset itself.

An appropriately structured agreement applied to the wrong asset remains a compromised outcome. Availability, pricing, and suitability all play a role in determining whether a transaction delivers value.

At Finance Warehouse, this is addressed through our partnership with Auto Investment Group, which enables us to assist clients in sourcing vehicles nationally across a broad network of new and used stock. Importantly, this also includes the ability to structure trade-ins as part of the transaction, ensuring clients are not constrained by limited dealership options.

Their philosophy, that people invest in people, aligns closely with our own approach — one that prioritises guidance, access, and long-term fit over transactional convenience.

A more deliberate approach

The current environment does not require slower processes, but it does require more deliberate thinking.

Efficiency should not come at the expense of clarity. While digital tools have made finance more accessible, they have not removed the need for interpretation, comparison, and considered judgement.

Ultimately, the quality of a finance decision is measured over time. It is reflected in how well the agreement adapts to changing circumstances, how it supports broader financial objectives, and how effectively it balances cost with flexibility.

Conclusion

The evolution of finance has made access easier and faster. What it has not done is reduce the importance of understanding.

Approval may be immediate, but the implications are long-term.

For that reason, the distinction between a convenient decision and a well-considered one has never been more relevant.

At its core, Finance Warehouse is built on the principle that better outcomes are achieved through a combination of access, structure, and human engagement,  not speed alone.

When fuel rises, the real pressure shows up somewhere else

South Africans always feel a fuel increase quickly. First at the pump. Then in deliveries. Then in food. Then in the quiet squeeze on household and business cash flow.

MAN WORKING OUT ASSET BUDGET

That is why the current fuel conversation matters.

As at mid-March, South Africa’s inflation data was still relatively contained, with headline CPI easing to 3.0% in February after fuel prices fell that month. But the environment has shifted sharply. Current local reporting, drawing on Central Energy Fund data and economist commentary, points to a potentially severe fuel-price adjustment in April, alongside the fuel-levy increases already announced in Budget 2026. Analysts are also warning that diesel is the bigger inflation risk because it runs through transport, logistics and production costs.

The finance sector often responds to this kind of moment too narrowly. It talks about the fuel price itself.

But the bigger story is what happens next.

For many South Africans, especially self-employed earners, tradesmen, small businesses, transport operators, farmers and households already carrying monthly commitments, a fuel shock does not stay in the fuel budget. It spills into everything else.

It changes affordability.

It changes repayment comfort.

It changes how much room is left at the end of the month.

That is where smart finance can make a genuine difference.

Not by encouraging panic borrowing. Not by pretending people should simply “tighten belts” while their transport and operating costs rise. But by helping clients restructure, consolidate, refinance wisely, or fund the right asset or efficiency improvement at the right time.

Sometimes the best financial move in a high-cost environment is not taking on more pressure. It is reducing the wrong kind of pressure.

For one household, that could mean refinancing an expensive vehicle structure into something more manageable.

For another, it could mean financing a more efficient replacement vehicle instead of pouring cash into an older one that is becoming costly to run.

For a business, it could mean using the right funding solution for commercial vehicles, equipment, solar or working capital so that rising fuel and operating costs do not choke growth.

For a buyer transacting privately, it could mean accessing finance in a structured, safer way rather than draining cash reserves at exactly the wrong time.

And for businesses serving clients in this climate, it means understanding that finance is no longer only about helping someone buy. It is also about helping them stay stable after they buy.

That is the real conversation South Africa needs right now.

Fuel increases do not only affect mobility. They affect resilience.

The people who will come through this period best are not necessarily the ones with the highest incomes. They are the ones who act early, understand their cash flow clearly, and make financing decisions that give them breathing room rather than take it away.

That is where practical finance advice matters.

At Finance Warehouse, we understand that every client’s pressure point looks different. For some, it is a vehicle. For others, it is business equipment, solar, working capital, or a monthly repayment structure that no longer fits reality.

In a rising-cost environment, the right finance solution should do more than approve a deal.

It should protect your ability to keep going.

Your income doesn’t follow a template. Your finance shouldn’t either.

The way people earn a living has changed.

Today, more South Africans are building income in ways that don’t fit neatly into a job title or a fixed monthly payslip. Whether it’s running a business, freelancing, consulting, earning commission, or managing multiple income streams, the traditional definition of income is no longer the full picture.

And yet, for a long time, finance has been structured around a very narrow view of what earning looks like.

A fixed salary. A consistent payslip. A predictable pattern.

If you didn’t fit that mould, accessing finance often felt more difficult than it needed to be.

But finance is evolving

What lenders are really trying to understand is simple.

Can you afford the commitment, and do you manage your finances responsibly?

A payslip is just one way to answer that question.

It is not the only way.

Bank statements, cash flow patterns, consistent deposits, and a clear financial track record can all paint a far more accurate picture of affordability, especially for those who earn outside of traditional structures.

Your financial story matters

If you are self employed, earning commission, or running your own business, your income might not look predictable on paper, but that does not mean it is not real or reliable.

In many cases, it reflects:

discipline
consistency
financial awareness
the ability to manage risk

All of which are exactly what responsible lenders look for.

Preparation makes the difference

The strongest applications are not always the ones with the highest income. They are the ones that tell a clear story.

Keeping your financial records up to date, maintaining a healthy credit profile, and understanding what you can comfortably afford all contribute to a smoother process.

When your finances are well managed, it shows.

Finance should work with how you earn

The reality is that the world of work has moved forward, and finance is steadily adapting to reflect that.

If your income does not follow a traditional path, it does not mean finance is out of reach.

It simply means it needs to be understood properly.

Let’s have a conversation

If you do not have a regular payslip and want to explore your options, we are here to help.

Is This the Most Underrated Way to Buy a Car in South Africa?

man inspecting auction vehicle

There’s a quieter, smarter market shaping the way informed South Africans are buying vehicles in 2026 and it’s hiding in plain sight.

While most buyers scroll dealership listings and classified ads, the real value in South Africa’s used-car economy is changing hands elsewhere. Not behind glass windows. Not under showroom spotlights. But under auction hammers where banks, fleets and corporates release vehicles the average buyer never even knows existed.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth: this is the part of the market most buyers are missing.

As new-car sales surged in recent years, a wave of well-maintained, low-mileage trade-ins quietly flowed back into the system. Many didn’t land on dealer floors at all. Instead, they moved straight through bank and fleet auction channels, the same channels historically assumed to be “cash only” or “for dealers”.

That assumption is outdated. And costly.

Today’s auction market is packed with the same three-to-five-year-old vehicles buyers are chasing everywhere else: SUVs, bakkies and hatchbacks sitting squarely in the sweet spot of depreciation, warranty balance and modern features. The difference? Many of these vehicles sell below trade values, allowing buyers to step into better-specified models, newer year ranges, or retain budget for extras and reconditioning — value that’s rarely available through traditional channels.

Yet most consumers never even consider auctions, not because the vehicles aren’t right but because they believe finance isn’t.

It is.

Bank finance is available on auction purchases. Pre-approval is possible before the auction. And buyers who arrive prepared don’t just bid, they compete with confidence.

In a market where inflation is squeezing budgets and value matters more than ever, auctions have quietly become the most efficient way to buy used if you know how to access them.

That’s where the real gap lies. Not in supply. Not in demand. But in awareness.

Auction Finance lists genuine upcoming auctions nationwide, including vehicles from WesBank, Standard Bank, MFC, ABSA, Imas, government fleets and manufacturer-backed (OEM) auctions such as Mercedes-Benz. Vehicles are sold transparently to the highest confirmed bidder, often at true market-related prices.

Second Chances, First-Class Cars: The Unexpected Joy of Buying at Auction

ABSA’s Upcoming Gqeberha Auction Might Just Change the Way You Think About Buying a Vehicle

By Auction Finance Insider

In a world where dealerships push balloon payments and private sellers disappear with your deposit, there’s something surprisingly refreshing , even thrilling about buying a car at auction.

And not just any auction.

This Thursday, 17 July, ABSA Bank is hosting a genuine bank repossessed vehicle auction in Gqeberha (PE), offering a line-up that would make even the savviest car buyer raise an eyebrow. Over 150 vehicles — from late-model hatchbacks to nearly-new bakkies, will be available online, live via webcast, and it’s the kind of event that rewards those who know how to spot value where others only see risk.

But is buying at auction risky? Or is it just misunderstood?

What the Dealerships Don’t Want You to Know

The vehicles going under the hammer aren’t lemons or leftovers. They’re repossessed, yes — but often for reasons that have nothing to do with mechanical faults. In fact, a quick glance at the catalogue reveals some eye-watering gems:

  • 2022 VW Polo TSI Life – just 6,122km

  • 2023 Renault Kiger – under 33,000km

  • 2024 VW Polo Vivoonly 11,242km (barely out of its plastic!)

  • 2022 Ford Ranger Wildtrak Bi-Turbo – prime bakkie, low mileage

  • Peugeot, Nissan, Kia, Toyota, Isuzu — all 2020+ models, many with mileage under 50,000km

Forget the cliché of auctions being the last resort for desperate buyers. This is a smart buyer’s playground — especially for those who come prepared.

The Secret Weapon: Pre-Approved Auction Finance

Let’s be honest: cash buyers are rare these days. And waiting for a bank to process your loan after the hammer drops? That’s a guaranteed way to lose your bid.

That’s why pre-approved finance has become the new norm for serious auction-goers.

The Human Side of the Hammer

There’s something strangely beautiful about watching a vehicle roll across a digital auction block. It’s not just a transaction; it’s a second chance. For the car. For the buyer. And sometimes, for the seller too.

In Gqeberha, that story plays out not just in front of a screen, but at 142 Burman Road, Deal Party — where you can view the vehicles in person on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 July, from 09:00 to 15:00.

Come prepared. Come curious. And come knowing that ABSA’s auction platform is one of the most trusted in the game.

From Pre-Approval to Sold! Inside the ABSA PE Auction with Nicol from Auction Finance

The ABSA Passenger & Commercial Vehicle Auction is landing in Gqeberha on 12 June 2025, and buyers are already circling quality stock—from SUVs and sedans to trucks, trailers, and even yellow metal equipment. But before the first bid is placed, smart buyers are already speaking to Nicol Palmer, one of Auction Finance’s seasoned F&I consultants, to get pre-approved and ready to roll.

We asked Nicol to share what buyers need to know before auction day, and why getting your finance sorted upfront is a non-negotiable.

Nicol Palmer - F&I Auction Finance

📝 What’s the first step to securing finance at an auction?

According to Nicol, it all starts with a completed application and the right supporting documents. The requirements vary slightly between private buyers and businesses, but the goal is the same: get a clear picture of your financial profile before the bidding begins.

For private buyers:

  • Completed and signed application form

  • SA ID and valid driver’s licence

  • Proof of address (credit provider statement, not older than 3 months)

  • 3 months’ bank statements (6 months if self-employed)

  • 3 months’ payslips

  • Proof of additional income (if applicable)

For businesses:

  • Completed juristic application + director applications

  • Company registration docs (CK/PTY)

  • 6 months’ bank statements

  • Audited financials or up-to-date management accounts

  • Proof of address (for the company and all directors)

💡 Why does pre-approval matter?

“Bidding without finance in place is risky,” Nicol warns. “Buyers often assume their credit is perfect, but things can go sideways quickly. If your bid is successful but the bank declines your finance—or offers a poor rate—you only have 48 hours to pay, or you’ll lose your registration deposit and be blacklisted from future auctions.”

That’s why Auction Finance helps clients apply in advance, giving them a realistic approval amount, clarity on rates, and peace of mind to bid with confidence.

🚛 What kind of vehicles are on offer?

Buyers can expect a wide range of assets at this auction:

  • Popular cars and SUVs

  • High-end models

  • Commercial vehicles (trucks, trailers, bakkies)

  • Agricultural equipment and yellow metal

  • Even buses and non-runners (note: non-runners can’t be financed traditionally, but Auction Finance can assist with personal loans if needed)

🔧 How does Auction Finance tailor finance for each buyer?

“No two buyers are the same,” Nicol explains. “We take time to understand your needs—whether you're a private buyer, a fleet manager, or a small business. We also offer value-added products like warranties, insurance, and deposit protectors. We don’t just secure finance—we set you up for success long after the auction.”

💼 Why choose Auction Finance?

Nicol doesn’t hold back: “There’s no one else quite like us.”

Auction Finance works with all four major banks—ABSA, Standard Bank, WesBank, MFC—as well as a panel of 13 private funders. That means clients can compare offers and choose the best one for their needs.

“If it has a VIN or engine number, we can finance it. We’re what I like to call the hybrid of finance,” says Nicol. “You get options, support, and a team that genuinely cares.”

⏱️ How long does approval take?

If you’re a private buyer with your documents ready, approval can happen the same day. For companies, it usually takes up to 48 hours, since the vetting process is more complex.

So don’t wait for auction day—get everything in order now.

❓ What advice would you give to first-time bidders?

Don’t let auction fever get to you,” Nicol laughs. “Stay cool, set your limits, and attend the viewing days to inspect the vehicles properly. The more prepared you are, the better your experience will be.”

👥 How does Auction Finance support buyers on the day?

On-site support in the Eastern Cape is hands-on: “We help you register, get your buyer number, and guide you through the process. We’re there to make sure you feel confident, not confused.”

💬 Final thoughts?

“If you’ve never financed through an auction, don’t stress. We’re here to walk you through everything. And if you’re already a savvy buyer—come get a better deal with us.”

MFC Vehicle Auction Brings Over 150 Bank Cars to the Block in Gauteng

Motorists on the hunt for well-priced, late-model vehicles will have their pick of more than 150 options at next week’s MFC Bank Vehicle Auction, taking place on Wednesday, 16 April 2025, in Kempton Park, Gauteng.

MFC BANK AUCTION

Hosted by MFC, a division of Nedbank, the auction will be held at M57 Pretoria Road, Glen Marais — with public viewing scheduled for the day before (Tuesday) between 08:00 and 16:00.

Buyers can expect a diverse catalogue that includes sedans, bakkies, hatchbacks, and SUVs, many of which are 2022 and newer. Several standout lots have under 10,000km on the clock — including a 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 Xi, 2024 Hyundai i20 Premium Auto, and 2024 Nissan NP200 Safety Pack, all with mileage below 6,000km. A few luxury and commercial models will also be on offer, such as a 2022 Lexus ES 250 EX, 2023 Haval H6 GT 4x4, and 2023 Isuzu D-Max 1.9 DDI Auto.

The full catalogue is available at www.mfcauctions.co.za, with details on each lot, including mileage and service history where available.

As a bank-run event, the vehicles come from repossessions and voluntary returns. While all sales are conducted “as is,” many units include Dekra condition reports and can be viewed in person the day before the auction.

For those needing finance, pre-approved clients can register without paying a deposit — a change from the typical registration process that often requires a refundable fee. Finance support is available through registered provider, Auction Finance (contact: Carin Visser, +27 82 654 7232), who assist buyers in arranging finance before the sale.

The auction itself follows a fast-paced bidding format, and while newcomers are welcome, organisers recommend familiarising yourself with the process ahead of time. Guidelines for registering, bidding, and understanding fees are clearly outlined on the auction website.

With showroom prices still rising and stock shortages affecting new car dealerships, bank auctions like MFC’s continue to attract interest from private buyers and resellers alike — many of whom see them as one of the last opportunities to secure vehicles below retail pricing in the current market.

A Facilitated Sale

Our P2P finance solution helps facilitate a smooth transaction between private buyers and sellers. We guide both parties through every step, ensuring the transaction complies with the necessary regulations, and we only work with verified, legitimate assets. We offer a streamlined process that guarantees both parties are protected, from verifying the asset to ensuring the buyer’s financing is secure.

Vehicle Peace-of-Mind

We take vehicle legitimacy seriously. Each asset is physically inspected by one of our experienced asset inspectors. We check everything from the general condition of the vehicle to verifying the mileage and ensuring the engine and VIN numbers match the documentation. Through a thorough HPI check, we make sure the vehicle is not stolen and has no existing finance tied to it. The inclusion of a Dekra report further reassures both parties, providing confidence that the asset is in good condition.

A Smoother Hand-Over

With Auction Finance’s P2P finance solution, we take care of the logistics, ensuring everything from documentation to payment settlement is handled professionally and efficiently. We facilitate the payment to the seller or the relevant bank (in cases where the asset is financed), handle the registration process, and confirm that everything is in order before handing the asset over to the buyer.

We’ve been a trusted partner in the vehicle finance industry for over 22 years, with strong partnerships with all major banks, ensuring that both the buyer and seller experience a hassle-free, transparent process.

For buyers, trust is key. That’s why we’ve designed a comprehensive process to ensure every asset is legitimate and free from risk. Here’s how we ensure the vehicle’s legitimacy:
