A Changing Vehicle Market Is Creating New Buying Opportunities

A recent TopAuto article highlighted a significant shift in South Africa's vehicle market. According to research referenced by the Automobile Association (AA), more than 90% of South African motorists are keeping their vehicles for longer, as the cost of replacing them continues to rise.

The article also points out that vehicles on South African roads are getting older, placing even greater importance on regular maintenance, preventative servicing and careful ownership to maximise reliability and longevity.

Fortunately, today's buyers have more options than ever before.

Looking beyond the traditional dealership

While many motorists automatically begin their search at a dealership, an increasing number of savvy buyers are discovering the value available through Bank, Fleet and Commercial Vehicle Auctions.

These auctions offer access to an extensive range of vehicles from banks, finance houses, fleet operators, rental companies, government departments and corporate fleets. From hatchbacks and family SUVs to bakkies, commercial trucks, plant and machinery, auctions provide buyers with access to thousands of vehicles entering the market every month.

One of the biggest advantages is value.

Many auction vehicles sell well below traditional retail pricing, allowing buyers to stretch their budgets further or step into a newer, higher-specification vehicle than they may have initially considered.

More choice. More opportunities.

South Africa's auction market is incredibly diverse. Every week, auctions take place across the country featuring:

  • Passenger vehicles
  • SUVs and bakkies
  • Commercial trucks
  • Fleet replacement vehicles
  • Repossessed vehicles
  • Construction and agricultural equipment
  • Plant and machinery

Whether you're buying your first car, upgrading your family vehicle or expanding your business fleet, auctions present opportunities that many buyers simply don't realise exist.

One place to find them all

Knowing where and when these auctions are taking place can be the biggest challenge.

That's why Auction Finance brings together one of South Africa's most comprehensive listings of upcoming Bank, Fleet and Commercial Vehicle Auctions in one convenient location.

Browse upcoming auction events nationwide, discover new buying opportunities, and take the first step towards finding your next vehicle.

Second Chances, First-Class Cars: The Unexpected Joy of Buying at Auction

ABSA’s Upcoming Gqeberha Auction Might Just Change the Way You Think About Buying a Vehicle

By Auction Finance Insider

In a world where dealerships push balloon payments and private sellers disappear with your deposit, there’s something surprisingly refreshing , even thrilling about buying a car at auction.

And not just any auction.

This Thursday, 17 July, ABSA Bank is hosting a genuine bank repossessed vehicle auction in Gqeberha (PE), offering a line-up that would make even the savviest car buyer raise an eyebrow. Over 150 vehicles — from late-model hatchbacks to nearly-new bakkies, will be available online, live via webcast, and it’s the kind of event that rewards those who know how to spot value where others only see risk.

But is buying at auction risky? Or is it just misunderstood?

What the Dealerships Don’t Want You to Know

The vehicles going under the hammer aren’t lemons or leftovers. They’re repossessed, yes — but often for reasons that have nothing to do with mechanical faults. In fact, a quick glance at the catalogue reveals some eye-watering gems:

  • 2022 VW Polo TSI Life – just 6,122km

  • 2023 Renault Kiger – under 33,000km

  • 2024 VW Polo Vivoonly 11,242km (barely out of its plastic!)

  • 2022 Ford Ranger Wildtrak Bi-Turbo – prime bakkie, low mileage

  • Peugeot, Nissan, Kia, Toyota, Isuzu — all 2020+ models, many with mileage under 50,000km

Forget the clichΓ© of auctions being the last resort for desperate buyers. This is a smart buyer’s playground — especially for those who come prepared.

The Secret Weapon: Pre-Approved Auction Finance

Let’s be honest: cash buyers are rare these days. And waiting for a bank to process your loan after the hammer drops? That’s a guaranteed way to lose your bid.

That’s why pre-approved finance has become the new norm for serious auction-goers.

The Human Side of the Hammer

There’s something strangely beautiful about watching a vehicle roll across a digital auction block. It’s not just a transaction; it’s a second chance. For the car. For the buyer. And sometimes, for the seller too.

In Gqeberha, that story plays out not just in front of a screen, but at 142 Burman Road, Deal Party — where you can view the vehicles in person on Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 July, from 09:00 to 15:00.

Come prepared. Come curious. And come knowing that ABSA’s auction platform is one of the most trusted in the game.

Ready to Take the Driver’s Seat?

Secure pre-approved finance and take control of the bidding before it even begins.

Let’s Ride: Why the Bloemfontein Vehicle Auction Should Be on Your Radar This Week

By Auction Finance Insider

For most South Africans shopping for a car, auctions are still uncharted territory. But ask anyone who's been to an Aucor Bloemfontein vehicle sale and they'll tell you: it’s one of the best-kept secrets in the car-buying world. Whether you're after a bargain, hunting for something special, or just want more value for your money—this auction might just surprise you.

Lets Ride. Come & bid on our MFC & Standard Bank Vehicle Auction!

What’s Under the Hammer?

This Thursday, 05 June at 10:30, Aucor Bloemfontein is hosting a Multi-Bank Vehicle Auction, with vehicles from both MFC and Standard Bank hitting the block.

We spoke with auction manager Jaques van der Linde, who gave us a sneak peek into what buyers can expect—and it’s anything but boring. “This auction is dominated by super SUVs and small hatchbacks,” he says. “We're talking about 2024 VW Tiguans, T-Crosses, Polos, and Ford Territories, all with crazy low mileage.”

And it's not just new-gen stock. For those looking at the sweet spot of value and affordability, there’s plenty of 2-4 year-old Kia Seltos and Hyundai Venues, all with under 80,000km. The variety is rich too: older Polos, Nissan workhorses, and even a few surprises—like an eye-catching spread of BMWs, ranging from a slick 118i to a classic 335i.

How Much Should You Expect to Spend?

Prices vary—but deals are real.

While the brand-new SUVs may be tough to predict (this is Bloem’s first-ever Tiguan R-Line and Territory EcoBoost going under the hammer), Jaques says the bulk of auction prices traditionally sit between R70,000 and R180,000. The full spread can range from as low as R30,000 to over R500,000, depending on the make and condition.

So whether you’re shopping for a student runaround, upgrading your family wheels, or scouting a second car, there’s a lane for every budget.

First-Time Auction Buyer? Read This.

Jaques says Bloem auctions attract a steady stream of first-time buyers, many drawn in by the opportunity to get more car for less money. But don’t go in blind. His advice?

“Only bid on a vehicle that you’ve inspected. And I’ll say it again—only bid on a vehicle you’ve inspected!”

Take advantage of the viewing days on Tuesday, 03 June and Wednesday, 04 June (from 08:00 to 17:00 at 1 Kruger Avenue, Estoire). Know your budget, ask about VAT and buyer’s commission, and chat to Celeste from Auction Finance for help on pre-approvals or understanding total costs.

What Makes Bloem Stand Out?

Beyond the great cars, the Bloemfontein auction has built a reputation for its welcoming vibe and efficient layout. “Lekker people. Friendly. Helpful,” Jaques sums it up. “We have credible stock, low foot traffic compared to the big metros, and yes—you get a free cappuccino while you browse.”

Sometimes, the little things really do count.

Webcast Bidding: Convenient, But Be Prepared

Can’t make it in person? Pre-live online bidding opens Wednesday, 4 June at 14:00, and live webcast bidding follows on auction day.

If you’re bidding remotely, Jaques urges buyers to register early, get FICA documents in order, and double-check your internet setup.

“Bandwidth, speed, software—none of that’s under our control,” he says. “If you’re worried, use the Max Bid function so you don’t miss out.”

The Power of Pre-Approved Finance

Here's what many auction-goers still don’t realise: you don’t need to show up with a bag of cash. With Auction Finance, pre-approved bank finance is a simple, stress-free process.

“Celeste and her team don’t just crunch numbers,” Jaques says. “They explain the auction process, help you understand what you can afford, and make sure you’re bidding with confidence. That means fewer post-auction cancellations and happier buyers driving off in a great deal.”

Final Word: This Is Your Sign

If you’ve never considered buying a car at auction, now’s the time to change that. With high-quality, bank-approved stock, flexible finance options, and a welcoming environment, Aucor Bloemfontein delivers real value—and maybe even your next vehicle.

Why South Africans Are Turning to Auctions for Affordable Cars

With over 73% of new cars in South Africa now costing more than R500,000, owning a vehicle has become a distant dream for many. According to a recent article by TopAuto, the average formal sector salary of R26,800 per month means most South Africans can only afford a car priced at around R250,000—a price point where new car options are virtually nonexistent.

But there’s good news for savvy buyers: auctions are emerging as the go-to solution for affordable, clean, late-model vehicles. Here’s why more South Africans are turning to auctions to find their next car—and how Auction Finance can help you secure a great deal.

man buying a auction car

The Rising Cost of New Cars

As highlighted in the TopAuto article, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains, leading to production shutdowns and a surge in car prices. Even as production has recovered, prices have remained high due to factors like the fluctuating rand, high import duties (18%-25%), and the inclusion of advanced tech features in modern vehicles.

The result? The average South African is priced out of the new car market, with only a handful of models available under R250,000.

Why Auctions Are the Answer

Auctions offer a practical and affordable alternative to buying new. Here’s why they’re gaining popularity:

  • Unbeatable Prices: Auction trends show that vehicles are currently selling at around 85% of their trade value—well below retail prices. This means you can secure a high-quality, late-model vehicle for significantly less than you’d pay at a dealership.

  • Wide Variety: From fuel-efficient hatchbacks to reliable bakkies, auctions offer a diverse range of makes, models, and conditions to suit every budget.

  • No Dealer Mark-Up: By cutting out the middleman, you save on the hefty dealer mark-up, leaving room in your budget for insurance, maintenance, and upgrades.

  • Great for Resale: Buying at auction means you’re less likely to take a big hit on resale value, making it a smarter long-term investment.

Addressing Auction Concerns

We understand that some buyers may be hesitant about auctions due to the “voetstoots” (sold as-is) nature of the sales. However, reputable auctioneers like MFC provide Dekra inspection reports on all their vehicles, giving you peace of mind about the car’s condition.

Additionally, Auction Finance offers a variety of Value-Added Products and Services (VAPS), including warranty options and maintenance plans, to protect your purchase.

How Auction Finance Can Help

At Auction Finance, we make the auction process seamless and stress-free. Here’s how:

  • Pre-Approved Finance: Get pre-approved and know your budget before you bid.

  • Onsite Support: Our team is available at all major auctions, including bank vehicle, fleet, and commercial auctions, to assist you every step of the way.

  • VAPS: Protect your purchase with our range of value-added products.

Don’t Miss Out on the Auction Advantage

With new car prices soaring and affordability becoming a major concern, auctions offer a practical and cost-effective solution for South African buyers. Whether you’re looking for a fuel-efficient runabout or a reliable family car, auctions provide access to a wide range of vehicles at prices that won’t break the bank.

In the second quarter of 2024, used-car prices in South Africa only saw a slight increase of 0.6%—much lower than the country’s inflation rate of 5.2% for the same period. In comparison, new-car prices jumped by 4.4%, which is steering more buyers towards used vehicles.

With more and more South Africans opting for pre-owned cars, the ratio of financed used cars to new cars has risen to 1.44 in Q2 2024. That means for every new car being financed, there are almost 1.5 used cars getting the green light.

What’s Driving Buyers to the Used-Car Market?

As the cost of living rises, it’s no surprise that South Africans are looking for ways to save without compromising on quality. The used-car market is becoming an increasingly attractive option, and auctions offer a fantastic way to snag a deal. Not only can you find a variety of vehicles—often below dealership prices—but auction cars are usually well-maintained fleet or bank repossessions.

With the rise in used-car financing, it’s clear that more consumers are turning to the pre-owned sector as a way to secure quality vehicles at more affordable prices. Auctions are a great place to find them.

Why Auctions Make Financial Sense Right Now

Buying a car at auction can be a smart, budget-friendly decision, especially with used-car prices still rising slowly. At Auction Finance, we know that affordability matters. That’s why we’re here to help you get the car you want, without stretching your budget. Whether you’re looking for a family sedan, a tough bakkie, or even something a bit sportier, we offer tailored finance solutions to fit your needs.

Plus, you don’t have to worry about complicated processes—our team is ready to guide you through every step of buying and financing your next vehicle at auction. Learn more about how we can help at www.auctionfinance.co.za (FSP34936).

Younger Buyers Are Leading the Auction Charge

What’s interesting is that younger South Africans, especially Generation Z, are starting to enter the car finance market in larger numbers. In Q2 2024, the share of Gen Z buyers financing vehicles jumped from 7.9% to 10.9%. This shows that younger buyers are more open to alternative ways of buying cars, and auctions are proving to be an exciting option for them.

Ready to Bid? Here’s Why Auctions Could Be Your Best Bet

  1. Affordability – With prices rising slower in the used-car market, auctions are a smart way to get a quality vehicle at a lower cost.
  2. Variety – You’ll find a wide range of vehicles from bank repossessions, fleet sales, and more.
  3. Flexible Finance – We’re here to help you secure the financing you need, so you can bid with confidence knowing your finances are covered.

Why Buying on Auction is Becoming More Popular: A Look at Market Trends and Opportunities

As more South Africans face financial constraints, there has been a noticeable shift in consumer behavior when it comes to vehicle ownership. One significant trend, highlighted in a recent TopAuto article by Albert du Toit,  “What the average South African pays for a new car right now – And what you can buy with it,” indicates that South Africans are downsizing their garages and opting for a single, multipurpose vehicle instead of maintaining two cars. This move is largely driven by rising vehicle prices and diminishing disposable incomes. The average price of a new car in South Africa now sits at R391,000, an increase from R387,000 a year ago.

A sleek, modern car parked at an auction site with a visible "For Sale" sign, symbolizing vehicle auctions and potential savings.

This trend is not just about financial limitations but also about maximizing value. Many households are trading in multiple vehicles for a single crossover, SUV, or bakkie that offers more versatility. Ride-hailing services like Bolt and Uber have also made it easier for families to manage with fewer cars, while the cost of maintaining multiple vehicles continues to rise.

Why Buying on Auction Makes Sense

As car prices climb, more consumers are turning to auctions to get the most bang for their buck. At auctions, you can find late-model vehicles with low mileage, many still under service plans. The prices at auctions are often lower than retail, with cars fetching around 75% of their book trade value. This represents significant savings, especially for buyers who are unaware of the quality of vehicles available at these events.

For instance, reputable auctioneers like MFC Bank even provide DEKRA condition reports, ensuring buyers know exactly what they’re purchasing. Auction Finance is also available, making it easier than ever for buyers to secure the right financing for their new purchase. Despite common misconceptions, purchasing a vehicle through auction doesn’t mean sacrificing quality – it’s a smart financial move for those looking for great deals on vehicles.

From Supercars to Super Savvy: Why MFC Auction is the Real Playground for Collectors

If you’ve been following the latest trends among the ultra-rich, you’ve probably heard about the new breed of supercars calling out to collectors. These cars are as rare as a humble politician, and they come with price tags that would make even Elon Musk do a double-take. According to a recent article on TopAuto, these vehicles are not just about speed or luxury anymore; they’re about exclusivity, innovation, and—let’s be honest—bragging rights. Because what’s the point of having a car that can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds if you can’t casually mention it at your next dinner party?

Lamborghini Diablo Restomod with Gated Manual and V-12, featuring an excited Nordic man with kinky hair dressed in conservationist attire, close-up of his eyes against a pastel peach background.

But here in South Africa, we like to do things a little differently. While the ultra-rich are busy collecting their latest four-wheeled FabergΓ© eggs, the rest of us discerning shoppers are flocking to the MFC Auction, where we can bid on real cars—economical, reliable, and a lot less likely to make our insurance brokers faint.

Take Bridget, for example. Last week, she was at the MFC Auction, eyes gleaming as she placed her bid on a 2021 Kia Picanto 1.0 Street. Now, while it may not be a V12 Diablo, this little gem of a car will still get her from point A to point B with enough fuel efficiency to keep her bank account smiling. And unlike those ultra-rich collectors who are now considering how to afford that extra garage space, Bridget still has money left over to take a well-deserved vacation.

But Bridget isn’t alone. The MFC Auction is attracting a new wave of savvy buyers who understand that you don’t need to spend millions to get a great deal. With over 170 vehicles going under the hammer, there’s something for everyone—from first-time buyers to those looking to upgrade without breaking the bank. Whether you’re after a reliable hatchback, a family-friendly SUV, or even something with a bit more grunt under the hood, you’re likely to find it here.

And let’s not forget the savings! While those collecting ultra-exclusive cars are paying a premium for their rarity, MFC Auction shoppers are picking up vehicles at around 80% of their trade book value. That’s right—no need to be a millionaire to walk away with a fantastic deal.

Plus, for those who want to experience the thrill of the auction from the comfort of their own home, TikTok influencer @Sthe0051 will be covering the event live this week. Not only will you get an inside look at how the auction is conducted, but you’ll also get the chance to ask questions in real-time and see exactly what kind of deals are up for grabs.

So, while the ultra-rich are busy pondering which gold-plated, diamond-encrusted supercar to add to their collection, the rest of us can take pride in knowing that we’re making smarter, more economical choices. After all, who needs a car that costs as much as a small country when you can drive away in something that’s practical, affordable, and still leaves you with enough cash for a celebratory dinner?

Interested? The next MFC Auction is just around the corner. Mark your calendar for September 4th, and don’t forget to check out the full catalogue here. Bridget will be there, smiling behind the wheel of her new Kia Picanto—and who knows, you might just find your own perfect match.
